Adelaide is rife with incredible creative talent, such as DJ Tr!p, a long-time friend with whom I have always discussed collaboration but had never made the time for. When I bumped into Tr!p at Adelaide Fringe this year, something clicked and we made a date.
Our creative brief was an open messaging chain via email, text and Facebook messenger, plus some phone calls exchanging our favourite influences—musicians, artists and fashion photographers. We made the most of a day shooting whatever felt right at the time.
In addition to more conventional digital studio photography, we experimented with projection, film photographs and a variety of post-production techniques including some data-bending shenanigans I explored in the AlphabeNt: Experiments from A–Z. I wrote and published AlphabeNt in collaboration with Drew Taylor and copies are still available for purchase.
My favourite images were created using mixed media techniques. I printed images using my Epson SureColor P800, a high end inkjet printer for photography, on thick Ilford Galerie Smooth Cotton Rag then tore and collaged them together. I scratched back into these prints using a scalpel and rescanned the final artwork, sometimes with some extra flair, to create both images above and below. I’m aching to play more and hope to find time over summer.
Find DJ Tr!p’s hard hitting dark beats at finddjtrip.bandcamp.com and keep track of S U C C U B U S club nights to experience them live.
Hit me up if you’d like to collaborate sometime.
